Sources and Media Notes

The references, checking process, attribution, and media-rights boundaries used by ShadowDex.

Pokédex names, numbers, types, and generations

ShadowDex’s 1,025 species records are organized by National Pokédex number. Names and typing are checked against Pokémon Database’s complete Pokédex, while generation boundaries are derived from National Pokédex ranges.

The site stores the minimum fields needed by the games: number, name, URL-safe slug, and one or two types. It does not republish Pokémon Database descriptions, statistics, locations, moves, or articles.

Type-effectiveness chart

The modern chart is checked against Pokémon Database’s type chart. Automated tests cover all 324 ordered single-type relationships so a change to one cell cannot silently alter an unrelated answer.

Type Lab uses the current chart and does not reproduce historic generation-specific differences, ability effects, move exceptions, or other battle modifiers.

Artwork

The prepared transparent-background species artwork originated from media available through Bulbapedia pages and is stored locally in an optimized format. ShadowDex uses one image per numbered species for recognition and answer review.

Pokémon artwork and characters are third-party intellectual property. Attribution identifies provenance but does not itself grant a licence, establish fair use, or imply endorsement. Visible advertising is therefore kept off gameplay screens while media rights are assessed.

Cries

Cry files are mapped from the Pokémon Showdown audio collection and served locally as MP3 files. The game verifies that every numbered species has one mapped file and exposes the source link for transparency.

Pokémon audio remains the property of its respective rights holders. ShadowDex does not claim ownership of the cries, and advertising is not displayed on the cry game or its review screens.

Original ShadowDex material

The mode rules, scoring, saved-progress behavior, multiplayer implementation, accessibility behavior, interface copy, source methodology, and learning guides are created for ShadowDex. They are not assembled from scraped descriptions or generated as a large collection of templated species pages.

Before publication, each guide receives a human review for clear instructions, consistency with the linked game, accurate source use, and meaningful original learning value. The review date displayed on the article is updated when its editorial content or underlying methodology materially changes.
