How the silhouette challenge works
Each round presents one darkened piece of official-style Pokémon artwork. Four names are chosen from the same eligible pool, and only one matches the outline. After you answer, the artwork is revealed in colour before you move to the next species.
Skipping is available when an outline is unfamiliar. A skip does not count as a correct answer and is recorded in the review, making it useful for finding the species that need another look without forcing a random guess.
- Use the number keys 1–4 or the arrow keys when playing with a keyboard.
- Choose a type pool to compare Pokémon that share a battle type.
- Choose a generation pool to practise a familiar era before attempting all 1,025.
What to look for in an outline
Start with the largest features: body shape, stance, wings, tails, horns, ears, and the number of visible limbs. Small colour details disappear in silhouette, so proportion and negative space become more useful than markings.
When two choices have a similar body plan, compare where the widest point sits and whether the outline is balanced or asymmetrical. Evolutionary relatives often share design language, but their size, posture, and added appendages usually separate them.
Progress and review
ShadowDex saves each eligible pool separately. A Fire-type run does not overwrite an all-Pokémon run, and a Generation II run remains available when you switch to another generation. Completed and in-progress runs can be reviewed from the launcher.
The review shows the correct artwork, your selected answer, and the Pokémon’s type. Use it as a short study list rather than immediately starting another full run: a few deliberate comparisons are more memorable than repeating hundreds of guesses without reflection.
